Music

Intent

At Oasis Academy Putney, it is our intent that we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to sing in tune and with other people. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music as well as technical vocabulary. We teach the children how to collaborate to compose music with responsible risk-taking in preparation for a creative future economy.

Our music curriculum encourages children to listen and to appreciate different forms of music. It builds up imagination and intellectual curiosity as well as helping develop language and reasoning. Children will also learn about how music can represent feelings and emotions and how it can support their wellbeing.

Research

Education Endowment Fund indicates that the impact of arts participation is positive and improved outcomes have been identified in the core subjects English, mathematics and science. Research suggests that arts participation has a greater effect on average for younger learners and, in some cases for disadvantaged pupils and benefits have been found in both primary and secondary schools. Wider benefits include more positive attitudes to learning and increased well-being.

Key Stage 1 & 2

The National curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
  • Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Key Stage 1 National Curriculum Attainment:

Pupils should be able to:

  • Use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes.
  • Play tuned and untuned instruments musically.
  • Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music.
  • Experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the interrelated dimensions of music.

Key stage 2 National Curriculum attainment:

Pupils should be able to:

  • sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control.  They should develop an understanding of musical composition, organising and manipulating ideas within musical structures and reproducing sounds from aural memory.
  • play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression.
  • improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music.
  • listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory.
  • use and understand staff and other musical notations.
  • appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
  • develop an understanding of the history of music.

 Implementation

Children have a wide exposure to different genres of music, with lots of practical opportunities to explore and develop as musicians and singers.  The school also has whole class ensemble teaching in Years 3 and 4 where children are taught a specific musical instrument for a school year.

In Year 3 the children learn the recorder. In Year 4 children learn the clarinet. These lessons incorporate teaching musical notation, singing, as well as learning to play an instrument.  Opportunities are taken to perform in class, in whole assemblies and also to parents and the wider community.

  • Children will have the opportunity to foster their musical skills.
